I'm a father of nine, grandfather of seven, and I own an insurance agency with three locations here in the St. Louis area. But if you get me talking for more than five minutes, the conversation almost always ends up on my wife.
Here's a good example.
A few years back we threw a Christmas party at Adventure Unknown with karaoke going. It was fine, but nobody was really moving. Then my wife got up and sang Selena. She's an excellent dancer, and the room started moving because she was up there. So we kept her on stage, put on Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," and the place took off.
I remembered that.
A while back I threw an awards party at the same place and hired the Cardinals stadium DJ, the guy who runs the music at Ballpark Village before and after games.
But here's the thing about parties. You can have the best DJ in the world, but if nobody gets on the dance floor first, nobody gets on the dance floor.
So before the party I sat down with the DJ and we built an entire playlist. Not for the crowd, not for the vibe, not for what we thought everyone else wanted to hear.
For my wife.
My goal was simple. Keep her on the dance floor and I knew that everyone else would follow.
She came off the floor for three minutes the whole night.
Everybody had fun.
I tell that story because it's how I think about pretty much everything, insurance included. There's usually one thing that matters more than all the rest combined, and once you find it and take care of that, the rest tends to sort itself out.
With insurance, that one thing usually isn't price. I'm not trying to sell you a policy. I'm trying to find the one thing that matters most for your situation: the gap, the missing piece, the thing that would cost you everything if it went wrong.
And make sure that gets handled first.
Just like I knew if my wife was having a good time, the rest of the night would take care of itself.
I got into more of this on the Zach and Pat Show a while back, how being a cop and a firefighter for 25 years before I ever sold a policy shaped the way I think about insurance and relationships, and why I'd rather get you the right coverage than the cheapest one.
